Business Networking, Your Business’ Life’s Blood

We know that you have heard that “Networking” is essential for your business success.  When was the last time you have acted on that Networking advice?

We need to be very clear that we aren’t talking about reading one of the books on Business Networking.  We are talking about a real rubbing shoulders with, shaking hands and asking question “Networking Event!”

What you need to do is attend events where there will be business owners or decision-makers to buy your product or service. Don’t waste time attending all events as there will be a lot of events where people are just not suitable as a business partner or purchaser.

You need to make sure that if you are shy that you need to get out of your comfort zone. Walk up to people that you do not know and introduce yourself. Introduce yourself with a firm handshake, look them in the eyes and say your name and company name.  Don’t rush to tell them about you and what your business can do for them. After they introduce themselves, ask them questions about their business.

Questions Like:
1. How did you get started in that business?
2. How long have you been doing that?
3. What do you like best about your business?
4. Questions related to the subject of the Networking event.

Make the conversation all about them and not you. People love to talk about themselves. If you allow them to talk about themselves and their business, you will be remembered as someone who took the time to get to know them.

Networking is never about the quantity of business cards you come home with.

After the event, send a follow-up email, “snail” mail a handwritten note, or call to make an appointment. This follow-up should happen on the next business day after the event.

The follow-ups should be short notes to remind them of where you met, wish them success in their business, and remind them of what you do. Consider inviting them to other networking events so you are offering them value and not just trying to entice them to buy from your business.
