Walking, Talking Advertisements

Every customer that touches your business can become your very best salesperson or in an extreme case they can become your worst enemy.  In today’s social web lifestyle the word about your business, good or bad can spread like wildfire.  The real bad news is that statistics show a person is seven times more likely to post a bad review than to post a good review.

The likelihood, of people posting bad reviews Vs good ones, is related to why the news companies know the following axioms of Bad News Sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news.  Many people ask for more good news to be reported and that never seems to happen because the TV and newspapers know that nobody reads the “good-news.”

It seems, however, there is another side to social media,  The likelihood of reviews or news being spread beyond the first posting is that “good” information is more likely to be shared with others.

This trend shows that information is being spread and monitored in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules. By scanning people’s brains and tracking their e-mails and online posts, neuroscientists and psychologists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.

So really good news will be shared more often than news that is negative.  This part of social media helps offset the trend that bad reviews are initially more numerous.

Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication — e-mails, Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations — found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things?

In another attempt to understand what’s buzzworthy, neuroscientists have scanned the brains of people while they hear about new ideas. Then, as these people told others about what they had heard, the scientists observed which ideas spread and which didn’t.
