Marketing and Cute Kittens

Have you ever been out shopping and then there they are, some very cute kids and a cardboard box full of meowing, cute kittens?  Did you stop and make funny noises while petting the adorable kittens?

Yes, don’t get me wrong this works with puppies as well.  Which one causes you to stop divides you up into the cat or dog world, but the marketing sure works.

Yes, this is Marketing 101 at its finest!

In order to sell something you first have to get their attention.  Yes, the price must be right as well.

We agree that in most cases these are free puppies and kittens.  How can you possibly resist something that cute, cuddly and smells so good when it is free?

I know bakeries in the mall that use exactly the same strategy to sell their fresh items.  You are walking through the mall when that aroma grabs you and pulls you into their shop and a dozen or so fresh pastries climb into you basket without any thought of you needing them.  Your nose just takes over your brain and makes the purchase.

In order to successfully grow your business, you’ll need to attract and then work to retain a large base of satisfied customers. Marketing emphasizes the value of the customer to the business, and has two guiding principles:

1. All company policies and activities should be directed toward satisfying customer needs.

2. Profitable Sales Volume is more important than Maximum Sales Volume. 

To best use these principles, a small business should:

• Determine the needs of their customers through market research

• Analyze their competitive advantages to develop a market strategy

• Select specific markets to serve by target marketing

• Determine how to satisfy customer needs by identifying a market mix
